Los Angeles, Present Day

Thankful her hands finally stopped shaking, Faye sat on her best friend’s couch, under a fleece blanket with a superhero logo, and drank a sip of chamomile tea. She was grateful to have a place of refuge, at least for the moment, although she had already explained to Jane she wouldn’t stay with them past today. Faye felt the risk to the family’s safety was too high, and she was only there because Jane’s husband was off work today and home. She believed things would be okay while he was here, considering he was a six-foot-four police officer.

Still, if she had to admit it, she’d rather be with Saxon. No matter what the woman said this morning, Faye wanted to be near her. Not just because of the amazing attraction that drew her in, but because she felt incredible safe. Saxon simply radiated power, especially after they saw the message on the wall. All but carrying Faye out, she helped her into the car and took her to Jane’s. Unfortunately, Saxon needed to leave to secure the movie location tonight and arrange for someone to fetch Faye’s car. Checking her Apple watch, Faye saw it was thirty minutes until Saxon would be back to pick her up. She was anxious to go not only to see her but to stop worrying she was putting Jane and her family in harm’s way.

After turning on a movie for the boys in the TV room, Jane returned to sit beside Faye. She put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into a side hug. “You’re sure you don’t want something a little stronger than tea?” Jane asked. “I’m fairly sure we have some rum left from our last party. I could mix it with a diet coke?”

Faye rested her head on Jane’s shoulder. “No, thanks,” she said. “I need to be sharp for the shoot tonight, and Saxon will be here soon.”

“Are you sure you’re up for that tonight?” Jane asked. “I can’t imagine they wouldn’t take a night off for you after this.”

Faye lifted her head and pulled the blanket up higher. “No, Saxon already offered me that,” she said. “But I’m not going to let this guy jeopardize my chance on being in Venandi. It means too much to me.”

Jane nodded. “Okay,” she said. “But if you see anything or start to feel weird—”

“I will stop,” Faye interrupted with a weak smile. “I promise.”

“And you’re sure you don’t want to stay with us a little longer?” Jane asked. “Mitch will stay home another day or two if it will make you feel better.”

Faye snaked a hand from under the blanket and grabbed Jane’s. She gave it a squeeze. The woman was such a good friend, and Faye knew she was lucky to have her in her life. Which was even more reason she would never agree to stay longer than she already had. If anything happened to them, she would never be able to forgive herself. “No,” she answered.
